In April 2024, we embarked on another ski trip to Iceland, this time to the remote East Fjords. This region is surrounded by numerous small fjords and many mountains. The East Fjords are home to some villages among the first settled by the Vikings. The experience of a ski trip in Iceland is as unique as the country itself—a land of impressive geological formations and truly “living” nature. The volcanic activity, still active to this day, shapes and creates the land of Iceland. During the snow-covered months, two colors dominate: the white of the snow and the black of the volcanic rocks, beaches, and the sea, which has a dark, leaden hue, reminiscent of a film noir setting. Only the vibrant burgundy and other colors of the houses and villages stand out amidst the black and white landscape!
The skiing exceeded our expectations, and apart from one rainy day, we didn’t miss a single day on the slopes! We completed daily ascents of up to 1400 meters in elevation! The view of the fjords from the mountain peaks will remain unforgettable. The snow conditions varied, ranging from fresh, heavy snow and crusts to hard and icy surfaces. Even on the rainy day, we made good use of our time. We began the day with a visit to the local museum of economy and tradition, where we toured exhibits showcasing the characteristic professions and tools of the past century. We were particularly surprised to discover Greek cigarettes in the tobacco section, which were imported to Iceland from the Kingdom of Denmark (Iceland was under Danish rule until 1914).
Later, we visited one of Iceland’s largest modern fishing trawlers, which was truly impressive! From detecting and identifying fish schools to catching and storing them in specialized cooling chambers, the experience was fascinating.
Our Iceland adventure concluded with a return journey from the East Fjords to Reykjavik via the Northern Ring Road—a road trip that will remain unforgettable! Frozen waterfalls, geysers, and hot springs within snowy landscapes created a unique scene.
Iceland was our last destination for 2024 and perhaps one of the best ways to close the season! Like all the countries we visited, Iceland is a place we plan to revisit. There are still areas for skiing, particularly in the Northwest Fjords, that we would like to explore in the future.
