Hokkaido & Tohoku – The Ultimate Powder Journey

From the very beginning of FREE TOURING, Japan has been one of the most inspiring and sought-after destinations for a ski touring journey — a place where mountains, snow and tradition come together to create a truly unique experience.

In January 2027 we return to northern Japan for a special trip dedicated to the pursuit of legendary Japanese powder. This journey takes us to the snow-covered volcanic mountains of Hokkaido and Tohoku, where some of the best skiing conditions on the planet are found.

Japan is a land of contrasts: a country with deep history, strong cultural identity and unique traditions, yet also one of the snowiest places on Earth. Every winter, storms arriving from Siberia generate extraordinary snowfall, with total snow accumulation often exceeding three meters.

In northern Japan, low temperatures and the region’s geography create the perfect conditions for the famous Japow — incredibly light, dry and deep snow that has made the area a global reference point for powder skiing.

This journey combines exceptional ski touring in volcanic landscapes, unforgettable tree skiing in deep powder, and accommodation in authentic Japanese onsen ryokan. After each day in the mountains, we relax in natural hot springs while enjoying traditional Japanese hospitality and outstanding local cuisine.

This is a carefully designed ten-day adventure for those seeking the true Japanese powder experience — combining mountain exploration, spectacular landscapes and a deep connection with Japan’s culture and traditions.
